I first learned of this treat from a booth at the Portland Pet Expo, and it has turned out to be an excellent, safe chew for our golden retriever puppy. When we first gave it to her, she absolutely loved it and chewed it for 15+ minutes straight, which was quite an attention span for our then 11 week old puppy. The pet expo sold samples at a discount, but said the retail price for this size chew was ~$24, so I was glad to find it on amazon for so much less.

The himalayan chew is a combination of cow and goat cheeses, which is smoked for 7 months to produce a very hard chew which softens with puppy slobber. It does not stain, smell, or splinter. The only potential risk is a choking hazard as the chew gets small (what bone doesn't have this risk?). However, we learned a trick at the pet expo that most people here don't know:

DON'T throw away the treat. When it gets so small you worry about choking, take it away and let it dry then microwave it for 10-15 seconds. The small chunck will get 3+ times larger, and will be less dense as a result. Now it is safe again to give to your pet as a quick treat. This way there is no waste, and your pet enjoys every last bit of it.

EDIT: I have noticed it takes more like a minute in the microwave to fully expand. Your results may vary depending on the microwave power just keep an eye on it and stop when it is no longer expanding.

Now that we have had two himalayan chews around the house for five weeks, our golden isn't quite as crazy about it as when we first got it, but she will still happily chew it over most of her toys and treats, and she hasn't finished either one yet. She still won't chew it for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, so it has time to dry out and harden again between chewing sessions. For larger dogs and more agressive chewers, I would expect that it wouldn't last nearly as long since it will stay softer as they keep chewing for longer times.

I am now on my third package of Himilayan dog chews from Amazon. They are amazing and you can't beat the free shipping from the suppliers on Amazon! My search for a long lasting chew started when our lab/doberman puppy was only about 3-4 months old. I had read so many good things about bully sticks so I ordered them and then just about threw up when I smelled them! I tried to look over it, gave it to our pup (who loved it) but then not only did it smell while he was eating it, but his breath was stinky for a while afterwards! Plus, I'd say the bully stick didn't seem to last much longer than a regular (non-stinky) rawhide. Then I ordered the Himilayan dog chew. He wasn't sure how to approach it since it is literally rock hard. But, then he started scrapping it with his teeth. He isn't the type of dog to take big bites so he's never gotten any big hunks off of it. One chew last weeks since we usually save it for an after dinner snack/entertainment (1-2 hours at a time). Not only does the Himalyan dog chew last a really long time, it also barely smells at all unless you hold it to your nose! And, at that, it's just a smoked gouda type smell so it's not repulsive like a bully stick. Plus, it seems to keep our pups breath smelling much better than if he doesn't have it! We had actually taken a Himalayan dog chew with us on a road trip to my parents house and their dog (9 year old lab mix) actually snuck into our bag and stole the cheese! This is actually a very surprising thing because their dog has NEVER been a chewer. If given something hard, she actually just hides it and never eats it. So, to see her take the cheese and bite small pieces off, I knew she must have loved it! On our next visit I made sure to have an extra piece of cheese just for her. Needless to say, I cannot recommend trying this out enough! If it ends up your dog didn't like it, you just tried one more item in an attempt to make them happy. If they love it though, you will have found a great investment in your dogs health and happiness! Our pup LOVES his cheese!

I bought this at my local high end pet food shop for $9. I brought it home, and gave it to the pup on the patio. My dog is a 70 lbs lab/pit mix around 1 year old. The good: he loved it and didn't upset his stomach at all. The not so great: lasted about 90 minutes, in two sessions. I gave it to him on day one for an hour, and he finished about 30% of it, then I took it away and saved the rest for the next day, which only took him like half an hour to seal the deal (nothing left whatsoever). It's fun for a try, but at $9, I think I won't buy too many more.

I gave this to an eight month old chewing maniac boxer pup who can consume a bully stick in less than an hour. She loves it and chews it every chance she gets, nearly a week and she has barely put a dent in it. Very low odor as well.

After my dog's recent TPLO surgery I searched for something to help keep her joints healthy. I bought these treats because of the great reviews I found online. I've tried both the peanut butter and these (lamb & rice) and my dog likes this flavor best. I have a bigger dog and these treats are small so I give her a handful twice a day.

Please note the biscuits arrive in a cardboard box, but are loose in an open bag. The bag is flimsy and not air tight. Once they arrive I immediately put them in air tight containers to ensure freshness, I suggest you do too. Hopefully they will come up with a better method for shipping.

My 12-year-old Dalmatian takes glucosamine for her joint pain. It became increasingly difficult to get her to eat the large tablets commonly available, even when tricked out with peanut butter or other tasty spreads. Happily, three Nutri-Vet dog biscuits morning and evening give her the same amount of glucosamine as the tablets, and she likes the biscuits very much.

The only problem with these biscuits is in their packaging: they are poured into a lightweight plastic bag in a cardboard box, and so should be transferred to a sealed container to keep them fresh. I'd gladly pay a couple bucks more to have them in a sealed tub from the start.

Despite some negative reviews about the taste of these from others, our two dogs (admittedly, not very picky) eat these readily, and they do seem to help with their joints. Fair warning, though: we received the entire order of biscuits directly in the cardboard box that they were shipped in, which had started to come open. The biscuits were in ok shape, but storing/managing that volume without a decent container has (plastic bag or otherwise) has been a bit of a hassle.

Corgi's are too smart for their own good. In other words, they get bored SUPER easy because they figure out things so easily. The first few times I handed this thing over to my corgi, he whined because he couldn't figure it out right away. It took a few weeks of him testing it out but now he LOVES it. It keeps him busy for good while. Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

Pros:

It's made of hard, sturdy plastic and is quite durable.

The rounded corners ensures that is rolls in a sporadic pattern. Which is great for dogs with herding instincts as they spend half their time chasing it around.

It has 3 difficulty settings. Once it gets too easy, click it on over to the next setting.

It's a cinch to clean.

Cons:

It's made of hard, sturdy plastic and could be a threat to any low lying furniture.

It makes a TON of noise while it's rolling around (think baby rattle). It makes even more noise if you have hardwood floors.

*UPDATE*

As suspected, after a solid 6 months of use my lil guy works this thing like a pro. Even on the hardest setting it takes him about 15 minutes to empty it out. That being said, it's still held up strong to all sorts of abuse, bouncing off walls, floors, furniture, chewing. He still loves it too.

My 9 year old corgi had both the 5" and 3" Buster Food Cubes several years ago and they were great both of them last at least three years of daily use and washings. The only draw back was that they were very hard to get apart so I filled them by just opening up the hole to its easiest setting and shaking the food into it, not a problem. We got away from the Cubes for awhile when she was on a diet, but I bought her one about a month ago, and it was lighter and much flimsier feeling than her old ones, and the middle core was very easy to take out, so filling was faster, but so was emptying. Today after just over a months use she got the core out herself and got her lower jaw stuck in the hole. She is a pembroke welsh corgi about 25 pounds, so a medium-ish sized dog,and the cube was the 3" size; we got it off of her without a trip to the vet, but not without considerable yelping and panic (on both our parts). Do not buy these things for your dogs if you think there is even the slightest chance that their jaw would fit into the hole when the core is out of it, because any dog will eventually get that core out.

Lasted less than a month. Dog was able to disassemble and destroy the insert in a matter of 5 minutes (insert was set on the hardest setting). The insert shattered into sharp bits of plastic that could have caused serious damage to my dog's insides, would not recommend to anyone that likes their dog, and doesn't want to stare at their dog every second while they are playing with it.

Bought this to occupy a then 9 month old mini-poodle/ Shih Tzu. Have taken it out once a month and presented it to her and no luck. She didn't take to it as well as other intelligent toys that just required that she grab it and shake it until the food popped out. This toy requires that the dog is motivated to bat it around like a soccer ball to get the food to come out. It is a hard plastic, so when it has kibble inside it sounds like a rattle. Which startled my pup. So she has no interest whatsoever. Tried to get 3 other dogs (toy pom, and 2 60+ pound dogs) to play with it and no luck. If your dog likes to push things around then this would be a good toy. If they like to pick their toys up with their mouths then they may not like this so much. It would probably be a great concept for the dog that likes it. So for that reason I give it 3 stars.

My horse LOVES these! He really favors the mint one.

This may sound odd, buy sometimes I try my pets treats (except my cat's treats, because of the nasty ingredients... ick) Other than the cat treats, I always try to buy treats that only have stuff in them that I would eat. Natural, safe, healthy. So, in honesty, I ate a small chunk that fell off of a newly opened cherry likit, and I was shocked at how good it taste! :) Hahaha, so no wonder horses love them. and if you think that is gross, the likits have the same things in them that can be found in human food. So although it isn't made for humans, it is made of the same things.

I would be careful with the molasses flavor because, like my horse, some horses are allergic to molasses. I've gotten to making him home made treats and having to buy molasses free treats because of his reactions.

TIP: do NOT just place this in their buckets; they can grip it and take a HUGE bite out of it and they can eat it within one sitting. you MUST use the toy accessories that the likit's belong with, so that they can not just bite it to bits.

TIP: I found that during the coldest times of winter, the likits would freeze / harden and wouldn't lick as easy and beau really struggled to get any, unlike the summer where it goes faster (he was licking it the same amount in summer and winter)You can try soaking it in warm water for a few mins and thoroughly drying it off, so it gets softer and so it makes it easier for them to lick it, or you can keep one in a warm area, like closer to a heaving vent (but obviously not on it!) (& i am not sure how it would do with microwaving) and switch the warm likit with the cold one every so often so that your horse can enjoy it easier, and they get a warm tasty treat while its cold out.

TIP: During the summer, you can have a few flavors in the freezer, and switch them out with the treat set out for your horse every so often so your horse has a nice cool treat to lick on when its hot out.

Overall, yes I agree it is expensive, but I still really like these treats. I suggest you should give them a try. If you dont want to dish out all that money for the treat AND the toys, if you aren't sure your horse will like the treat, just buy one of these refills and see if your horse is interested, then you can get the toys that go with it.

Give it a try :)I suggest getting more than just one flavor though.

We have a diabetic dog, Vet put her on that W food and she looked like she was near death and hair grew awful. I did some research and this food was highly recommended but was not exactly for diabetic dogs. After years of searching and trying alternative foods I've finally found it! High(ish) protein and moderate fat. Lower in calories. Perfect grain-free kibble for senior and diabetic pooches! No more tear stains and no more dry skin. I don't feed her chicken anymore but rotate the Lamb in every other month. Don't be fooled by grain-free foods with a ton of potatoes and tapioca because it's just as likely they will cause issues as it is for corn and rice to. Keep an Eye out for their new Cat formulas in summer 2013.

My 6 lb Pom-Chi mix has severe food allergies. I've spent the entire year I've had her trying to find a food that a) didn't cause allergic reactions, b) she could and would eat. All foods she can eat safely have a kibble size that she can't handle. Even prescription food. I actually broke my food processor trying to break up kibble from a well known prescription diet. If food is that sense and dehydrated, it make you wonder how much nutrition she's actually getting. A lot of foods have some ingredient(s) that cause her to itch, scratch and have watery eyes. More than a few she wouldn't eat sniffed and walked away and no matter how much I coaxed her they were epic fails. I was at my wits end trying to find the right food when a friend recommended Nutrisca Salmon and Chickpea.

Nutrisca Salmon and Chickpea has been a success for the most part. The kibble size and density is perfect for a tiny girl and she LOVES it so much I use it for training treats. Seeing my picky girl dance for her food is so fun to watch. She still has some mild allergy responses that could be environmental but with a minimal dose of antihistamine, she's as close to a "normal" dog as I've seen so far. Her coat is healthy and shiny, bald patches are filling in and she's got eyelashes for the first time in her life!

My only complaint is that I can't find this food locally but Amazon Prime makes it even easier delivered right to my door!

These are pretty dry, so they last a while. I do like to check on my dog to make sure that he doesn't try to swallow the bigger pieces that he chews off, but it's still a great product. He loves to chew them, if I need some time to do something and don't want to put him in his crate, this is a sure-fire way to occupy him.

The saddest part is when I take one away. I like to rotate through a few of them, after it gets saturated with spit it becomes very easy to destroy, so if you let them dry in between chewing sessions they seem to last longer. Gross, but it works.

I would say that my dog is a fairly aggressive chewer, and he takes 40-60 minutes total to destroy one, but that's when you let it dry in between sessions. If I gave it to him and let him go nuts, he'd probably have it gone in 30.

Im giving this toy only three stars because it is a good chew toy, however the squeaker inside is pretty obsolete. The toy is hard so alot of force is required to make the squeaker squeak. My 7lb Morkie does not have the jaw strength to make it squeak. I would imagine alot of puppies couldnt do it either. It also looses a star because with the squeaker inside you cant put a treat inside like with the original Kong toy.

We have 3 dogs. Purchasing treats for the dogs has almost become a problem because I have become aware that treats from other parts of the world often have impurities which cause kidney problems. Yet almost all dog treats now come from abroad. The dogs love these treats--are excited to receive them. I feel relieved to have found them because the bag says Made in USA and people who know more than me say that is a good sign for safety. Unfortunately this last order arrived and it was very disappointing. Instead of 1/2 to 1/4 size pig ears, what arrived was nothing more than SPLINTERS of pig ears, some pieces only 1/8" to 1/4" across, no kidding. Not worth chancing re-ordering tpig ear SPLINTERS. They also did not look like the usual Smokehouse brand pig ears.

I have ordered the 40 count piggy slivers before and was very happy with them. I ordered the 200 thinking I would save some money by buying them in bulk. First of all, only 180 were sent, not 200. The slivers are almost all fat. they are horrible quality. When I contacted the seller asking for a replacement with the product I was expecting, their response was simply that they sent the correct product and I could return them for a refund if I wanted. Horrible quality and horrible customer service. I would not buy this product again.
