I bought this as a chew toy. I didn't use the rawhide that came with it. I put a small amount of peanut butter in the groves from time to time, but my dog isn't picky.

That said, this toy didn't last long. It's still in one piece and all, but the ends are a hazard due to the chewing. I expected that. I have an old nylabone that is similar with the end pieces and it was harder and last longer than the material on this particular toy. I kinda wish it was of that quality as this stuff is a little softer. Still, my dog enjoyed it.

I've brushed/sanded the hazardous ends down a bit so that he can safely continue using it. For the price, I got my moneys worth.

(This refers to the medium.) My 35lb pit-mix rips through most materials except the heavy nyla plastic or Kong rubber. But I don't like her always chewing on the harder plastic because she has a chipped tooth. This is the best of both worlds and occupies her for hours. Even if you run out of the jerky discs, you can just put peanut butter in the grooves. I liked this so much I already bought a different style from the same company.

This is probably my miniature schnauzer's favorite toy. He rarely tires of it, and it has held up for almost a year of daily chewing. He gnaws on it even if there are no treat discs on it, though he is more excited about it if he knows I put them on there.

Small pieces of the purple, rubbery part have come off from time to time, but they're small enough and soft enough that it seems pretty harmless.

Josie is a stray and wolfs every meal down like she's been starved and finishes her food in less than a minute. I purchased the large after reading a great review saying a whole cup will fit in the large. I like the various levels and openings you can twist the product to dispense food. Though it does take a little bit of focus to fill the toy up with kibble without unscrewing it entirely (often falls out the other side), this is a great way to keep my mastiff puppy engaged and keeps her from scarfing down her meals all at once. The puppy kibble falls out pretty easily, even when the toy is tightened down all the way, but I imagine that bigger bits will be perfect when she grows to be a little bigger. After several weeks of use, this thing seems plenty durable and is holding up fine. Very happy that I can just stick it in the dishwasher after use!

I bought this as a Christmas present for my dog. He won't play with it. I've tried showing him how to bat at it, rolled it around on the floor so he sees where the food comes out, practically stood on my head trying to get him interested. He wants the food/treats, but he won't play with this. He will stick his tongue in the hole and fish out the food and then tilt it the other direction and try to get more food from the other side. Once he's gotten all the food/treats he can by doing that, he's done. He won't bat at it or push it with his nose or anything. He's had other treat balls and puzzles that he liked, but he always manages to break them or the treats come out way too easy and he doesn't have to work for it. I thought this would be a good purchase because it's tough and adjustable so you can let a little bit or a lot out at a time. My dog just doesn't think it's that fun.

All 3 of our dogs love the various vitamin-enriched "tasty pastes" available from Kong. Although they loved to chew on their Kongs before, we found that they really got into it when we inserted some of the paste into the cavity. All of them go "nuts" when we put down the "pasty Kongs" for them to enjoy and enjoy them they do!

I would highly recommend all of Kong's "tasty pastes" it's easy to use, doesn't seem to make any mess, and is a great extra treat for dogs. Our 3 give it "2 paws up"!

WE loved this for our dog, at first. Unfortunately after a few uses, his abdomen became distended, he became flatulent (and very stanky, yes STANKY), and had loose stools. Not exactly something you want in a large dog. Peanut butter will be on our shopping list from now on; it's cheaper and works so much better.

Let's get one thing straight first: dogs love this stuff. I mean they REALLY LOVE IT. Not just my puppy, but every dog in my office the second this stuff comes out, my desk is surrounded by noses that smelled it from across the office. And they want it so bad they'll watch wistfully as my puppy devours it, just a little bit, from his Kong. When he's done, they get in line to steal the Kong and the lucky one will spend several minutes working on it just in case there's any left.

By the end of the afternoon, I am choking on the odor that rises at regular intervals from under my desk in nearly visible clouds of pure dog fart stench. By the time we get home, even the puppy will stop in his tracks every few minutes and startle at his own rear end, not entirely sure what's going on back there but knowing it's probably not good. By the end of the evening I am swearing to myself once again that tomorrow, no matter how desperate I am to occupy him and get some work done, I won't give this stuff to the puppy and turn him into a 6.5lb tactical nuke.

I think today was the last time he'll be getting it, and the rest of the can is going in the trash. It's just not worth it!

What a strange and awkward name for a toy... But it does look kinda like a pickle. And it smells like tapioca pudding. And it is a heck of a lot of fun to ask the dog "Where's your pickle?" in front of company. :-0

But seriously, this toy is awesome!!!! Our 55 pound Australian Cattle Dog mix LOVES it. And better yet, she has only been able to dent it but not destroy it. The pickle is still fully intact with just some tooth dents, similar to what we see on a Kong after a few weeks.

We do not use this for treats, just for playing and chewing. The ACD loves to play catch with this toy inside the house (but we have to be careful as it is a hefty solid chuck of rubber stuff that could totally take out a lamp or plant). She also just loooooooves to run around with it hanging out of her mouth like an oversized cigar. She will chew it sometimes, but prefers her Nylabones if one is handy.

I HIGHLY recommend this toy for Medium to Large sized dogs with lots of energy who are serious chewers and also need lots of different toys to keep them busy.

Toys that pass the ACD chew test:

Kong (we still use the Red, have not had to upgrade to Black yet)

LARGE sized Nylabone for Heavy chewers

Fresh moose antlers

chuck it balls (but these are always getting lost)

Pickle Pocket

Toys we thought would work that failed:

Kong Frisbee (died in 5 minutes of fetch)

Kyjen Fire Hose (died in 5 minutes of fetch/chew)

Orka Chew (died in 2 hours of chew, GREAT for fetch but dog prefers this toy for chew)

West Paw Bumi (died in 5 minutes of chew, GREAT for fetch and tug)

PawTrack (dogs just don't like chewing it, loved shredding the rope)

Any Rope toy is shredded into a mess in minutes (OK for tug, but still gets messy)

Our EM got this for Dogmas ;) I think it is a little to easy for her to get the treats out of the cracks. The material hasn't held up as well as some of our Everlasting Treat (EvT) products.

I've noticed some cracking in the material (it's not "plastic") but no chunks have broken off.

For size reference, if Mama were to stick this in her mouth length-wise, she would be able to hide it. She doesn't play with it like that tho, so we let her play with it.

She likes us to throw this thing and it will bounce off its end into an unexpected direction. Take care when using indoors!

For determined dogs: I would think that the skinny end shape might cause obsessive chewers to be able to get a piece off of the end. Every dog is different, so you would just have to watch your dog before leaving him or her with the toy alone.

As a certified cheapskate, I found it difficult to spend twenty bucks for a toy, even a good one made by the Starmark people. (We LOVE their green treat/chew balls.) But as a dog professional, when a heavy destructive chewer was coming for training, I felt obligated to spend the money and try this toy. Result? I LOVE IT--and so do the dogs who have enjoyed it for over two years now. We now own about four pickles. They have been enjoyed with and without treats in the pockets by ACDs, Labs, Amstaffs, a Sharpei-Husky mix, and others. Some dogs like it for tossing around and fetching, and others just lay down and chew. The toy bounces beautifully and crazily for more exciting fetch games, and two dogs can hang on and wrestle with it. As other Starmark green toys, it is virtually indestructible. Not hard plastic, but a nice firm, slightly squishable texture that is chewably fantastic....at least, that's what the dogs tell me.

And remember--like other Starmark products, this can be cleaned in the dishwasher or drop it in a bucket when you disinfect toys that are shared with other dogs.

My rottweiler LOVES LOVES LOVES these bones, he chews them hours a day, every day and they last forever.....after adopting him from rescue we got him one of these after he picked it out at the local pet store; he managed to chew on it for sometimes 8 hours a day and it still lasted him 3 months, now that he knows it will be replaced they are lasting upwards of 9 months each or longer; I then decided to check amazon for a better price and of course found it so he got two for less than the price of one at the local store. He can hold onto it easily and as he gnaws on it unlike other bones this one only has "dust" fall off, there are NO chunks or large pieces that break off, instead it's more like the texture of cornmeal that he ingests so there is no worry of him getting large pieces stuck or blocking his intestines, which can be an issue with other items.....this one is a keeper!!!! Get this if you have a power chewer that has a bone chewed to nothing in minutes this one WILL last !!!! Well worth the money!!!

When I first started to buy VitaGravy, my dogs loved it. After a few weeks, they don't seem to care too much for it anymore. They still get it in their kibble every day, and will eventually eat it when they are hungry, but they don't consider it to be a treat anymore. I still buy it because of its beneficial nutritional value and decent price compared to a pill vitamin supplement. One big negative I have noticed about it is that their face is getting dirty from it. They are white dogs and this product tends to cause increased tear and around-the-mouth stains. I used to buy all different flavors of VitaGravy, buy my groomer told me the chicken flavor is best as the beef and pork based flavors can cause an even worse increase in face staining.

The small size (3 inches long, 1-2 inches in diameter) is perfect for my miniature schnauzer. She goes nuts for filled bones. We only let her have it for a little while before we put it away, but especially when it's at the half eaten stage, it will keep her busy for 30 minutes or more, trying to get the filling out of the middle.
