**UPDATE: May 2012** I still have this ball! It's about 7 years old and still in great shape. I have 2 shelties now my older boy sheltie that I wrote about in my original review below has passed away, and now I'm the proud dog-mom to a 7 yr old girl sheltie (28 lbs) and a 4 year old boy sheltie (22 lbs). Even though they aren't big dogs, I'm glad I have the large size biscuit ball, it's a great size for them. I make homemade gluten-free biscuits for them these days, drying them so they're hard and crunchy and they don't fall apart easily. Because of this, the homemade biscuits work nicely in the biscuit ball as they're more difficult to get out of the ball compared to store bought biscuits.

**Original review**

While dog biscuits don't last 5 minutes in this ball with my sheltie, this ball will keep my little boy busy for over half an hour when I fill it with mashed banana or other fruit, yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, or his "real meals", ground meat with veggies, and then freeze it (makes him work harder for the goodies inside). I then place it either on our enclosed concrete patio that I can hose off, or in his doggie "playpen" out on the lawn, and my little guy goes nuts for it. Excellent mental stimulation, and much better than him just snarfing up his food in 20 seconds from his food bowl. We've had this over a year and a half, with no signs of wear. AND, it cleans up in the dishwasher! Highly recommended.

So far, Kong has been the only long lasting toy for my 8 month old pit bull. Everything else is torn to shreds. This kong ball is great for fetch, or for him to just sit and chew on. There are too many holds in the ball that make it really easy for a treat to be eaten, and on top of that there is an extra large space that allows the treats to just fall out rather quickly.

Even though this ball is meant to hold treats as its main selling point, i would recommend using it as just a strong ball that your dog can play with and not destroy quickly.

I bought this Kong Biscuit Ball about two weeks ago for my newly-adopted German Shepherd Dog. My oberservations are:

1) The Kong is made from very solid and durable hard rubber.

2) The openings are large so it is easy to put in biscuits, but ordinary dog food will easily fall out.

3) My dog plays with the ball infrequently. Usually only when there are treats inside. However, I'm sure all dogs are different.

4) The Kong should last a long time even if it's constantly chewed on.

Here is my secret to using the KONG Large Biscuit Ball for a dog who is NEITHER particularly food-motivated NOR interested in chewing. Lay a piece of jerky (your dog's favorite) inside the ball across the bottom hole. Then take one Iams Large dog biscuit and slide it through the two sides hole openings so that it fits all the way through the ball. These biscuits fit PERFECTLY into the Large biscuit ball and make it interesting and challenging for your dog to extract the treats. Some of my dog's techniques for dealing with this have been nosing it across the room into the wall, carrying it onto the bed and dropping it from this height, gnawing and slobbering on the ends of the biscuit to shave away at it, and using the back bolster of his bed for leverage to work the biscuit out. The difficulty of extracting the biscuit seems to make the jerky treat that much more gratifying. This procedure gave my dog more than ten years' worth of entertainment and turned the biscuit ball into a fabulous puzzle which gave a reasonable challenge to a dog who doesn't particularly care about toys. Highly recommended!

This ball is the typical Kong tough rubber, which is great. My dog has been chewing on it quite a bit and it hasn't ripped or torn yet. However, there are four bone-shaped holes in the ball, and one of them is significantly larger than the others. Every treat I've put inside the ball comes out of that hole almost instantly. I was hoping this would be more like the Kong, where I could put a treat in it and keep my dog entertained for a while trying to get it out, but that's not the case. Still an ok purchase though for a tough ball that he can chew and not destroy.
