I had never heard of Stella & Chewy's until about 6 months ago, but 'the girls' and I are now lifetime members of their fan club. They are a small (but growing!) company located in Wisconsin, founded by a woman who was determined to offer the highest quality diet to her ailing rescue dog, and saved his life. The rest as they say, is history. They produce all of their products in a facility they OWN and that is designed to meet and exceed the most stringent regulations in place for HUMAN food preparation. They use a third party laboratory to test EVERY batch of food they produce for harmful pathogens before they ship it, and post all the results on their website (you can enter the batch code on every bag, and see the test results). Their foods and treats are crafted from the highest quality HUMAN GRADE ingredients; are grain free, gluten free, hormone free, preservative free, no added dyes, no artificial flavors, no added sugar, with USDA certified organic vegetables and the highest quality meats (sourced locally, and each being certified for human consumption) used in their foods. Stella & Chewy's creates THE BEST, naked, unadulterated food available. I wish I was kidding when I say that my pets absolutely eat healthier than I do.

Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried Duck, Duck Goose (feline) is the reigning favorite in our house. It is a fabulous poultry alternative for those who are allergic to, or do not like, chicken (trying to find ANY cat products without chicken is nearly impossible). The food is in nugget form, making it very easy to measure. The nuggets are about gumdrop size, which is perfect for my adult cats, but also might be great for small dogs. The size is just big enough to force my pig-in-a-cat-suit to chew her food, and has almost eliminated her regurgitation issues (though sometimes she just can't help herself). The texture of the nuggets is surprisingly soft for a freeze-dried formula, which makes it easy to crumble, but also makes it likely to have partially crumbled nuggets and crumbs at the bottom of the bag (from shipping trauma); my cat has not given me any indication of disliking the crumbs at all despite a previous history of being a meal time diva, and having very distinct textural likes/dislikes. Freeze-dried foods must ALWAYS be moistened with water before offering! Cats have evolved to operate in a constant state of dehydration (hence their propensity to kidney and urinary issues), and routinely feeding it dry WILL have undesirable effects on your cat's renal system as the food will absorb what little fluid is available in your cat's system once consumed; ultimately, this practice will negate the benefits of feeding raw food, so please be mindful of always adding water.

If you have never considered or tried offering a raw diet to your cat or dog, the freeze-dried formulation is a very palatable place to start for both pets and the squeamish owner. It is a very forgiving formulation for someone new to feeding raw food; stable at room temperatures, with an easy to measure, small nugget composition that is a complete and balanced diet. Simply measure, add warm (never hot!!) or tepid water, allow to soak for 1-2 minutes, and feed. My HIGHLY allergic cat and dog who both have multiple protein allergies have absolutely flourished since I took the plunge. Their weights have stabilized (my outrightly obese, determinedly doughy, senior cat with kidney issues has rediscovered her waistline, has the energy to play again, and has not shown any recurrence of kidney/bladder stones (even on twice yearly screening xrays); my special needs rescue dog has filled out and gained desperately needed muscle mass). They both have been historically picky eaters, yet continue to display joy in their mealtimes and impatience with my preparations with the S&C formulas, even after twice daily meals for over 6 months now. Their coats, which I had thought were in pretty good shape, are now so soft they almost don't feel real, minimal shedding, no more hives/itchy/flaky skin, and they have no foul odor about them at all (our landlord was shocked when we told him the only bath we've given our dog was right after we adopted her from the shelter)! Their oral health has made a dramatic improvement as well; neither has bad breath anymore, with much less visible plaque build up and gloriously pink, healthy gums. I have also noticed and appreciated a fantastic improvement in their waste; smaller, firmer stools with almost no odor. **Please note that raw foods can not be 'free fed', and instead should be offered at two or more daily meals. Raw food should only be fed in a stainless steel bowl that is cleaned before each meal. A pet receiving raw food should also have a stainless steel water bowl, which should be cleaned out and refilled with fresh water at each meal. Proper human hygiene and hand-washing practices are essential, with equally attentive measures to counter top and utensil hygiene. Homes with young children with potential to want to 'share' a pets' mealtime with them, may want to wait until the child is older to try raw.**

If you still aren't convinced raw is worth a try, consider the fact that our beloved pets have never evolved to digest corn, soy, hydrolyzed proteins, and highly processed meat products; yet these exact things comprise the top 3 ingredients in an overwhelming number of seemingly high quality pet foods. Instead of a healthy digestion and absorption process with low variation in glucose and increased metabolic activity when given high quality proteins and complex carbohydrates to break down; these lesser ingredients instead tend to cause rapid fluctuations in blood glucose-over time causing undue stress in vital organ function, excessive weight gain, poor dental health, and resulting undue stress on joints. Foods that are manufactured using highly processed ingredients and requiring a great deal of manufacturer manipulation to make them palatable can also contain astonishing levels of histamine (which is not regulated, and can sometimes be found at levels considered toxic to adult humans); leading to allergies, seizures, and general misery for pets and their humans. The first step to taking an active role in preventing our pets from the rampant epidemic of pet obesity, diabetes, oral diseases, cancer and heart disease can be as easy as making an informed decision about their diet.

If you are considering taking the plunge to raw: CONTACT YOUR VET FIRST. Be prepared for resistance, general unfamiliarity with either Stella & Chewy's or any other US manufacturer of human-grade, balanced, lab tested raw food of this quality; prepare to be discouraged from trying a raw diet, and understand that YOU, as a responsible pet owner owe it to yourself and your pets to perform your own research about raw diets, to familiarize yourself with how to properly feed a raw diet, how to prevent illness in yourself and your pets from improperly prepared foods, or improper handling of the food, and to ferret out the sometimes tough to find studies (due to their small size, and usually independent funding) demonstrating the overwhelmingly positive results of feeding high quality, high protein, balanced foods in pet weight loss trials, renal (kidney) failure trials, seizures, allergies, etc. Take the time to read comments and feedback left by owners who have tried it with their pets. It is imperative that your pets' current health issues are considered before any changes are made to their diet, as there are conditions and circumstances which may render feeding a raw diet unsuitable, or potentially even life-threatening (such as an immunosupressed animal actively undergoing chemo, or an animal receiving daily immune suppressing medications (ie: long term, high dose prednisone for severe allergies or respiratory conditions).

Please understand that even now, most veterinarians are never required to complete more than a very basic class about pet nutrition when in school; some choose to base their recommendations on this cursory knowledge, while others have actively attended countless seminars, conducted their own clinical research, and are passionate about the subject of nutrition and the role it plays in health management. Like human doctors, every veterinarian has a unique background and areas or interest; please keep this in mind when consulting them about raw food-you WILL get a passionate response whether they are for or against. I have found that the veterinarians I have spoken with who were anti-raw, all based their objection to raw diets on the 'what if' scenario of food-borne pathogens causing pet illness, and then in turn also leading to human illness. All admitted after further discussion that a commercially-prepared, regularly tested raw food that was properly handled by the consumer (who actively ensured an environment of proper hygiene) posed very little chance of bringing their 'what if' scenario to fruition. All have been floored by the dramatic improvement in both my pets' health, and they have ended up advising me to continue with the raw.

I got this food on recommendation from my vet. My cat has had various digestive system issues nice he was a kitten (he's 6 now). I believe he has IBS. He was previously eating a hypoallergenic food with bad results. He had varying degrees of chronic diarrhea. I started mixing this w his food and within a few days started to see firmer, less voluminous stools. He has been on the food exclusively now for 3 days, and he actually has normal (turd shaped) stools....for the first Time in over a year!!! He also really likes the food too. He meows when I add the water and he can smell it. My only complaint would be the price. This stuff costs more per lb than filet mignon!

Frankie is my senior cat experiencing some issues with his teeth and his appetite. He loves the flavor of Duck Duck Goose, and I can crush the soft nuggets into finer bits and reconstitute it to a thinner consistency that he can eat more comfortably. It is helping to keep him alive and healthy, with no preservatives, chemical additives or dyes. I'm a fan!

This is a treat that my kittens sit up and beg for...they absolutely love this treat mix. The piece sizes are large, so it's a lot of condensed protein in one package!

I bought this because I wanted to give my kitties a nice balanced food. The only problems that I'm having with it are that it doesn't seem to rehydrate as well as I think it should, and my cats aren't really thrilled with it. I think that if it were in powder form so that it would hydrate better, that would help. For now maybe I'll stick it in a blender and try that.
