The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is that I still worry about the two ingredients. I did some on line research but was unable to find a good study and information about side effects. But it definitely does work. My 80 pound dog leaps up on the bed, sits on me, and drools on my husband in any sort of storm. This behavior is getting worse it started with thunderstorms and now includes wind.

I have discovered it only takes half the recommended dosage to calm him down. For his weight he should have 4 pills, but 2 work fine. It takes half an hour to take effect, but the dog does go to sleep for the rest of the night. I recommend some soothing petting while waiting for it to take affect.

The two active ingredients are Valerian root 25 mg and 5-Hydroxytryptophan 25 mg. Both these items are available separately for humans. Both are sleep aids I have taken. Valerian leaves me a little groggy in the morning. Tryptophan does not leave me groggy and _allows_ me to sleep without _making_ me sleep. You might want to try these ingredients separately if you are a minimalist.

There is a periodical called "The Whole Dog Journal" that often has lessons on how to get a fearful dog less fearful. Before you medicate, you might want to try their suggestions.

Here are other things I have tried that did not work for my dog, bu might for yours: Music on a CD called "Through a Dog's Ear;" (sounded really nice to me) A firm fitting shirt called "Thundershirt;" Desensitization with a noisy storm CD (my dog never paid it a bit of attention); and a pheromone that was supposed to remind him of mother's milk. That latter smelled like alcohol to me.

This is the only thing I have found that works.

I had to wrap this in peanut butter or cream cheese to get him to take it. It we are actually in the middle of a thunderstorm, only hamburger will work. Otherwise he is too upset for treats. I have noticed there are treats on line now with the same ingredients.

I recently adopted a farm dog who is having difficulty adjusting to city life. She had never lived in a house or had much human contact. My 70 lb Pyrenees started getting scared of the wind a few years ago. Enough so that I had to try something to calm her down. We live in Texas and the wind blows alot! I hated giving her Benadryl or other sleep aid. Started Comfort calm and saw results immediately. I give her one during storms if we are awake and if she wakes me at night, she gets two so she will rest. They work very fast, so I only give when needed. This is truly the best I have tried. I worked for a vet, so I know the different 'drugs' you can give. I feel good giving something that has no residual affect on her.

My dogs seem to love it and get quite excited when it's time for their treat..... But that's all it is. A treat. They get excited about it and stay excited. There is absolutely no effect on their behavior whatsoever, and I own three dogs of different breeds so it's a diverse sampling. There are all natural treats at the dollar storefor a dollar. I'll buy those once I'm out of these.

My recently adopted rescue dog is a little anxious in the car. He behaves, but he is a little restless and panting through the ride. Since he goes with us pretty much everywhere, I though this might be helpful. So I put 3 tablets (his recommended dose, he's a big dog) in with his dinner before we headed out. He was calm, sat down and didn't keep trying to get up and climb all over the seats like he normally does. He even laid down and napped on the way. However, he still panted a little heavily. It definitely helps a lot. It doesn't completely get rid of all anxiety, but it definitely helps the dog manage his stress better when he needs it. Oh how I wish I had bought this BEFORE the 4th of July, I think it would have made our night way less stressful. Next year, I will make sure to have some on hand for that night. It will be useful on an as-needed basis, which is exactly what I want. Very good product.
