These rawhide rolls cost a little more but are not preserved w/ lye, salt other poisons, and are not bleached and processed from dead, dying or disabled animals and left to sit on a ship from overseas for 3 weeks to rot further. They are very tightly rolled, thick rawhide which will take most large or small dogs several weeks to conquer because them come from American raised stock animals whose hides are naturally thicker than those of animals from other countries.

We buy these Retriever Rolls for our two labs. One is a strong chewer (75 pound female, and when I say strong I mean the only thing she does not destroy in one sitting are the black Kongs) and the other not so much (100 pound male). We love that these are made in the USA from American cattle. These are the longest lasting raw hides that we have come across, but unlike other reviews they do not last day/weeks with our dogs. Our female will normally finish hers in an hour and a half to 2 hours and our male in 3 hours (he gets tired and needs to take breaks). Although our female does not take that long to finish these she is exhausted once she is finished (a rarity) and will usually nap. These are so tightly bound that she has to really work to unravel it and then chew it. I definitely recommend this as a treat for anyone with a power chewer that is just looking to keep their dog occupied and happy for a few hours.

This is a serious hunk 'o hide. My terrier goes through a thick 12" bullystick in about 45 min.

So far, he chewed this for more than an hour yesterday and almost an hour this morning.

The hide roll is probably still 85% intact. Maybe 90. That's pretty amazing. There are other things that are as durable or more so. Nylabone, some other plasticky things.

But none that hold his attention.

The hide roll is not quite as fascinating to him as a bully stick. He might walk past it without being tempted. But once he does get going on it, he stays on it with complete concentration.

I have tried some other hide. A thick "bone" style one lasted a couple days. That was the best but not half as durable as this (and didn't fix his attention as well). Some premium hide chips from drsfosterandsmith that turned out to be pretty crappy (a big chip would last 10 min and gave him soft poop). And the worst -a fairly expense compressed hide "bone," that was supposed to be extra durable. That lasted maybe 30 min but cost a lot more than the chips.

This is the ONLY hide product I have tried that is a good alternative to bully sticks (which are expensive -in terms of dollars per hour to distract him). Plus he really shouldn't eat more than one a day.

We'll see if these hide rolls can hold his attention longer term. New is always good for most dogs. But so far, it's looking like my new go-to chew.

NOTE: If you have a smaller dog or a less hardcore chewer, I'd go for the thinner Whole Hide roll. This is a big and heavy roll. A little dog might not want to deal with the effort to get it started (getting the ends frayed so they can really go to town).

ALSO: These rolls are supposed to be processed in the USA. That's not just a good thing for patriotic, Buy USA sentiments. Supposedly these are treated with less harsh chemicals because the hides are not allowed to rot and get covered with mold and maggots before they're treated. Also these are made from hole pieces instead of little pieces squished together. That's probably why they're so durable.

UPDATE: My terrier went through the first one in 3 days of fairly steady work. But he just wasn't interested in them anymore after that. He'd get started on them and lose interest. I don't know if the outside has a flavoring or if it was just too big for him or what. The quality is good, but I expect it's the size and it's just too much for a medium sized dog.

These are the best rawhides I've ever used. I became concerned about the quality of rawhides after reading an online article and wondering what was actually in these treats I was giving my dog every night. To spare you the details on the article, I tracked down Wholesome Hides as a company where the rawhides were made in the US and not chemically treated. The added bonus was that these rawhides are incredibly thick and this version of their retriever roll has about 6 layers of rawhide coiled around each other. These are everything they say, I have a malamute that annihilates bones within minutes. Rawhide was not even in our consideration, he could rip it off in seconds and choke on sharp pieces.
