First of let me say this here hay-keeper worked out pretty good and our rabbit actually empties it out with ease.

And it hangs nicely from the top of the cage and we have a lot less hay lying all over the place.

The creators need to learn two things.

1. The door as found doesn't stay shut. Now if you're following closely, you just guessed that the next thing I'll say is that left as it is when it comes, the door will open and the hay in fact will fly out.

So you take a twist tie and seal the door shut.

2. That leaves the problem enunciated at our house as "so now how do I fillit back up?"

Our solution to this "locked door" problem was to instead snap off one side of the hay ball and fill it up. These plastic sides snap on, so it works for us. Ironically, they would be a whole lot easier to snap back on if the door wasn't there at all. So my humble suggestion to the team of design engineers in the hay holder department is this: just drop the door ( ie. Reduce costs) and make it easier to remove and replace at least one side of hay holder.

My wife and I bought this product for our 3 chinchillas. Overall the wheel is fun for them to play with since they can spin the ball while eating. The problem we had was that chinchillas chew on everything, like most rodent family pets, and the outside plastic only snaps onto the metal cage in a few areas. Well after chewing for a week or two the plastic snaps end up chewed as well. In the end we just super glued the plastic back onto the metal cage and havent had a problem since.

Additionally putting the hay inside the small cage door can be annoying for 2 reasons. 1.) the locking mechanism for the cage door is just the cage interlocking with itself with tension. Its effective for keeping the hay in but resulting in our first cage door breaking since it wasnt obvious how it closed. 2.) its just small and hard to get a large handful of hay into the hole without spilling some of it.

Lastly, I'm not sure that any other product could do a better job, but when our chinchillas pull out the hay, more than what they eat comes out and usually ends up dropping to the floor which ends up being wasted.

Overall its fun, hangs well, stays closed, but for our chinchillas who chew none stop, it has a few design flaws.

I bought this for my Mini Lop because I thought it was a cute idea and would look cool in the cage. Yes it is fun to hang on the cage or leave standing up but it is really hard to fill it. Every time I try to fill the hay it gets everywhere. I finally gave up and this holder has been sitting next to the cage for about 2 months. If you don't mind making a mess while filling it and having a hard time closing the door when it's filled, than definitely buy one because your bunny will like rolling the ball around while eating the hay.

I bought this at the pet store. Our rabbit wouldn't use it for a while, but once she got use to it it was just OK. I think that she eats less hay when we use this compared to if we just gave it to her in a pile. It works great in theory, depending on your rabbit's personality.

Cons:

You have to keep it stuffed to the fullest with hay, or else once it gets down to about half full the hay sort of hovers out of reach in the center and your rabbit won't be able to get at it.

Takes up a lot of cage space, even mounted on the wall. I guess it needs extra room for the spinning...

The spinning concept doesn't work so well in practice. When mounted on the stand it comes with, it will spin but will immediately spin back into the original position because of the weight of the hay. Our rabbit likes to pick and choose, so sometimes if she doesn't like any of the pieces sticking out of the side facing her she won't eat the hay at all. She eats the most when we just leave it on the floor with one plastic side taken off so it's like a bowl, but then that defeats the purpose.

The little swing-open door is pretty much useless. I usually just pop one side of the plastic off to fill it.

Pros:

Keeps the hay clean, fresh and off the floor.

Pretty well made.. Sturdy plastic that didn't get any looser after snapping it on and off to fill the thing.

Prevents the rabbit from throwing the hay all over the place (which our buns will do).

Entertains the rabbit a bit. When we first gave this to her she would throw it all over the place instead of eating the hay, so we finally mounted it to the cage.

I suppose I have to start this with admitting that I very strongly favor most Super Pet products. That doesn't really make any difference though, as my 5 guinea pigs totally dig the hay ball. 4 of them are only 10 days old, and they enjoy getting on both sides and making it rock back and forth while they eat. Coquette, their mother, actually does make it spin when she's feeling a little rowdy. Also, all of them are eating more hay than they were before the product was introduced. I don't use the door I pop the side off, which actually lets you pack in a lot more than if you were refilling through the door. I have it hanging on the wall of my cage, and it really doesn't take up that much room still plenty of popcorning and lap running happening.

I think a lot of people have too high of expectations when spending $8-10 dollars on a piece of plastic and some wire. This is a great simple product that does exactly what it is supposed to do. Don't hate.
