After switching dog food my dog had a bunch of positive benefits to the new food except for one his breath odor did not improve at all which was unfortunate since his breath smelled like...well let's just say it was awful. To help keep his breath in somewhat check (I would say from going from awful to extremely foul) we were using Iams Tartar Treats every other day. These treats do a great job of cleaning the teeth but are filled with a lot of ingredients we were trying to get away from when we switched dog food.
About two months ago I was in to buy some Tartar Treats and the woman at the pet store recommended Plaque Off.
This product does work, however you have to give it time. It took about two to three weeks to notice a difference. It's not like the smell of roses drift from his mouth but now when he licks my face I don't feel like vomiting and/or passing out. The price is very reasonable when compared to the amount of money we were spending on Tartar Treats. The container is small but the measuring scoop is very small and the product lasts a long time.

About Arsenic (information supplied by ProDen's creator, Dr. Sune Wikner)
It is important to understand that arsenic exists everywhere in nature. There are two forms of arsenic: inorganic and organic. The former may be toxic; the latter is not. In the US the upper safe consumption limit is 2 µg arsenic per kg body weight per day. In Europe the figure is 15. Note that those figures relate to inorganic arsenic. Several studies report that the algae that used in ProDen PlaqueOff contains exclusively organic arsenic (7 µg per scoop).
Moreover, ProDen contains alginates which are poorly absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. Instead they are excreted via feces. The alginates found in PlaqueOff have another well known property. They bind heavy metals like Strontium, Arsenic, Lead and Cadmium. Then the heavy metals leave the body via feces with the alginates and do not enter the blood. In fact, people living near nuclear plants in the US are recommended to eat algae if there is a risk for strontium leaking from the plant.
Therefore, there is no risk for arsenic poisoning for pets taking ProDen PlaqueOff."

UPDATE FROM ME:
So far, both cats HATE it when I add this to their food. I was doing it daily, but we had so much spoiled food
from them trying to bury it and refusing to eat it, that I stopped putting it in daily. We even took a break for a while.
I just put it in their food again last night, and again, a few bites because they didn't know I'd put it in there,
and they walked away!
I imagine this product would be fabulous for dogs, who (let's be real) don't get too picky over their food most
of the time. But for cat owners, it is doing to be a 50/50 if you can even get it down your cat.
We took several "before" photos of our cats' teeth so we could compare. That was a couple months ago, and we've
seen no change yet. However, it isn't a fair comparison when most of the time, they don't want to eat whatever I've
put it in.
I'm also still not thrilled with the arsenic description. Even though it might be safe amounts or a "safe" type,
I can't get past the association of "arsenic" and "poison". I guess the amount is negligible, but I'm not
totally content about it. I prefer to err on the side of caution. Cats are so small, I could see this building up
in their system and causing problems down the road.
There is plenty in the small package. The spoon for dosage is miniscule, but is the proper amt.
I use about half of that spoon for their wet dinner (one can is split between 2 cats for dinner).
I mix it in thoroughly. I even tried making a gravy paste (which they love) with warm water and some of
that night's can and the Proden, but they always know it is in there, and reject it.
So, I really can't recommend this for cats, since I haven't found a way to get it down them yet.
Anything they aren't taking in or keeping down can't be doing them a lot of good.

My 7 year old Sheltie had to have a "dental" at the vet with the risk of anesthesia, and the cost to me, last October. I vowed to prevent that from happening to her again, which the vet warned can start within months. We adopted 2 more dogs over the next 2 months. The newest rescue dog we adopted in December, a 5 year old Sheltie, arrived with nearly as bad teeth as our first girl had, before having her teeth cleaned. Plaque Off has prevented any plaque or tartar from redeveloping on our first dog, and has removed all tartar from the newest girl (the vet said she could still see a little tartar at her visit 2 months ago, but could tell that it was chipping off by itself) The 12 year old dog we adopted in November had awful (disgusting) breath, tartar, and bleeding gums, but due to her age and poor health/cancer, the vet and I agreed we could not do anything for her teeth, and she hated me trying to brush them (they all did!). 1 week on Plaque Off and her breath was no longer a problem, 5 months and she no longer has any tartar except for one canine and that looks like it's chipping off, too. Also, no more bleeding gums. She can eat better and the vet didn't even think she would live this long due to her cancer. She's obviously a happier dog all around, despite being a "hospice" dog. I am now utterly convinced that this product is safe and more than effective. When does a product actually do what it says it will anymore? This one does! Give it consistently and give it time, and once you are convinced like me, tell everyone you know including your vet because dog owners need to know about this. Also seems to work on cats since both of my daughters started their cats on a tiny dose of it, and no longer notice bad cat breath. I might have to start myself on a "human" trial!
**** Update 1 1/2 years later: Our oldest Sheltie passed away at 13, but with good teeth and therefore able to eat well until the end. The other 2 Shelties now ages 9 and 7 have beautiful teeth that keep themselves clean. We humans are now on the capsule form of Plaque-Off (which was originally developed for humans and is available with an online search for Proden Plaque-Off for humans). And we've already had better dental exams in less than a year.

As my title says I was really hoping that this would get some or all of the tartar/plaque off my Maltese's teeth so I wouldn't have to have a Vet put her under (always a dangerous procedure for animals or humans). My Maltese weights 6-7 lbs and is normally feed two Cesars a day, one in the morning and one in the evening. During the coldest months of the winter she sometimes eats three and this was the time period I put PlaqueOff on her meals. The label says that for dogs up to 25 lbs. you put 1/2 to 1 scoop on their food. I put a full scoop on Annie's food, every time I fed her, so you can see that for her weight she was getting a heavy dose. The label says that you will see results in 3 to 8 weeks. Well, it's been 8 weeks that she has been on it and as much as I really want to see a decrease in the tartar/plaque, I can discern no reduction in it at all! It saddens me that it didn't work for Annie but I wanted to share my experience with other loving pet owners. One point further. The label also says it gets rid of bad breath and that it did very quickly. Before starting her on PlaqueOff her breath would at times peel paint and now she can lick the tip of nose with no pain to me. However, I did not buy it for that purpose but was much more concerned about her tartar/plaque for which it did no good. I may buy it again just for the breath because Annie is so little that a container will last about 10 weeks. Annie is a very finicky eater but she seemed to have no objection to PlaqueOff being mixed in her food.
This part is being added on 10/28/2010. I bought another thing of plaque off after going through the first one and have consistantly given it to Annie since the middle of March 2010s so she has been on it for 7 months. Absolutely no reduction in the plaque on her teeth so quite honestly I highly question how legitimite the reviews are that claim great success for this product on their dogs teeth. This "stuff" does not remove plaque/tartar from dogs teeth!
This section was added on 04/18/2011. Annie has been on the PlaqueOff for over a year now and no reduction at all of the tatar and plaque on her teeth (but it does help her breath). A couple of readers commented that Caesars was not a good dog food and might be contributing to the problem so I switched her to "Wellness Turkey & Sweet Potato Formula" which received a 5 star rating at a dog food rating site (read the label of their dog foods; I should eat so healthily!) Anyway I'm glad I switched foods but the tartar and plaque are still the same.
