I first learned of this treat from a booth at the Portland Pet Expo, and it has turned out to be an excellent, safe chew for our golden retriever puppy. When we first gave it to her, she absolutely loved it and chewed it for 15+ minutes straight, which was quite an attention span for our then 11 week old puppy. The pet expo sold samples at a discount, but said the retail price for this size chew was ~$24, so I was glad to find it on amazon for so much less.

The himalayan chew is a combination of cow and goat cheeses, which is smoked for 7 months to produce a very hard chew which softens with puppy slobber. It does not stain, smell, or splinter. The only potential risk is a choking hazard as the chew gets small (what bone doesn't have this risk?). However, we learned a trick at the pet expo that most people here don't know:

DON'T throw away the treat. When it gets so small you worry about choking, take it away and let it dry then microwave it for 10-15 seconds. The small chunck will get 3+ times larger, and will be less dense as a result. Now it is safe again to give to your pet as a quick treat. This way there is no waste, and your pet enjoys every last bit of it.

EDIT: I have noticed it takes more like a minute in the microwave to fully expand. Your results may vary depending on the microwave power just keep an eye on it and stop when it is no longer expanding.

Now that we have had two himalayan chews around the house for five weeks, our golden isn't quite as crazy about it as when we first got it, but she will still happily chew it over most of her toys and treats, and she hasn't finished either one yet. She still won't chew it for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, so it has time to dry out and harden again between chewing sessions. For larger dogs and more agressive chewers, I would expect that it wouldn't last nearly as long since it will stay softer as they keep chewing for longer times.

I am now on my third package of Himilayan dog chews from Amazon. They are amazing and you can't beat the free shipping from the suppliers on Amazon! My search for a long lasting chew started when our lab/doberman puppy was only about 3-4 months old. I had read so many good things about bully sticks so I ordered them and then just about threw up when I smelled them! I tried to look over it, gave it to our pup (who loved it) but then not only did it smell while he was eating it, but his breath was stinky for a while afterwards! Plus, I'd say the bully stick didn't seem to last much longer than a regular (non-stinky) rawhide. Then I ordered the Himilayan dog chew. He wasn't sure how to approach it since it is literally rock hard. But, then he started scrapping it with his teeth. He isn't the type of dog to take big bites so he's never gotten any big hunks off of it. One chew last weeks since we usually save it for an after dinner snack/entertainment (1-2 hours at a time). Not only does the Himalyan dog chew last a really long time, it also barely smells at all unless you hold it to your nose! And, at that, it's just a smoked gouda type smell so it's not repulsive like a bully stick. Plus, it seems to keep our pups breath smelling much better than if he doesn't have it! We had actually taken a Himalayan dog chew with us on a road trip to my parents house and their dog (9 year old lab mix) actually snuck into our bag and stole the cheese! This is actually a very surprising thing because their dog has NEVER been a chewer. If given something hard, she actually just hides it and never eats it. So, to see her take the cheese and bite small pieces off, I knew she must have loved it! On our next visit I made sure to have an extra piece of cheese just for her. Needless to say, I cannot recommend trying this out enough! If it ends up your dog didn't like it, you just tried one more item in an attempt to make them happy. If they love it though, you will have found a great investment in your dogs health and happiness! Our pup LOVES his cheese!

I bought this at my local high end pet food shop for $9. I brought it home, and gave it to the pup on the patio. My dog is a 70 lbs lab/pit mix around 1 year old. The good: he loved it and didn't upset his stomach at all. The not so great: lasted about 90 minutes, in two sessions. I gave it to him on day one for an hour, and he finished about 30% of it, then I took it away and saved the rest for the next day, which only took him like half an hour to seal the deal (nothing left whatsoever). It's fun for a try, but at $9, I think I won't buy too many more.

I gave this to an eight month old chewing maniac boxer pup who can consume a bully stick in less than an hour. She loves it and chews it every chance she gets, nearly a week and she has barely put a dent in it. Very low odor as well.

Received this carrier after 7 days, missing the side clip and the water dish. Can't get a replacement in time for a trip, so I'm returning it. Just as well. It's REALLY cheaply made. I ordered this crate to use in the car for my havanese puppy. I just needed something to set on the car seat to take him back and forth to day care. I wasn't expecting much based on the price and on other reviews, but it failed to meet even my lowest expectations it's very flimsy I'd be afraid to lift it even with a 4-pound puppy inside. I'm keeping it as I don't want to spend the money on return shipping, and it will meet my needs if just left on the car seat, but if you are looking for a decent, well-made crate, I would suggest you spend the extra 10 or 15 dollars on a varikennel or something comparable.

My dog won a bag of these in his obedience class the first time we tried them; soon the cat discovered them and now she begs me for them daily. I like these because they are completely natural and nothing but salmon. I don't generally think of feeding fish to dogs but honestly I don't think there is a dog or cat out there that can resist them. I've used this product for years. It has 2 main ingredients. The first one kills live fleas and the second one (METHOPRENE) kills the flea EGGS! IF YOU DON'T KILL THE EGGS YOU'LL ALWAYS HAVE FLEAS!

I have dogs and cats. Some reviewers wrote that its not safe for cats-NOT TRUE! The first ingredient (Permethrin) is made from the flower buds of mums. Cats find it unpleasant but it won't hurt them as long as you don't apply it on them.

Zodiac is part of a 3 stage system for killing fleas. The other 2 steps are a topical treatment (Frontline Plus with Methoprine, and Capstar. Capstar is a pill that kills ALL FLEAS ON YOUR PET without doing any harm to them at all. Capstar is used in my clinic and shelters to kill fleas on infested animals. Capstar will NOT kill eggs and only lasts 24 hrs so apply the Frontline a day before. With dogs I just put it in a piece of cheese and they eat it. Cats are fussier so you can crush the pill and mix it in their food (tuna works best) but I'm a Vet so I know how to slide it down a cats throat.

Once given Capstar, put your pet in an enclosed space (the bathroom) for an hour or two and you'll see dozens of dead fleas on the floor. Some will still be alive so sweep them up with a vacuum and spray the entire area with ZODIAC immediately. A final tip: Fleas are easily killed by HEAT or COLD. Wash infected sheets, clothing, and put in Dryer on HIGH HEAT for an hour. Pillows and children's stuffed animals can be put in your FREEZER for 2-3 hours and all Fleas and Eggs will die. I hope this review helps with your flea problems. Remember, Neuter your pet!

First things first, this is magic, but only one component to fix your problem. Make sure you're got collars and sprays/topical treatment for the pet(s), too (if not flea lights like Victor) to cover all areas. If you only go with one approach, it's likely you'll be going in circles.

I sprayed all my carpets and my couches with this and so far, I'm only finding fleas on my pets. I tried flea collars and flea drops and nothing works. I gave my pets a bath, but fleas manage to reappear on their body. I'm hoping the cold weather will kill the fleas if I leave my pets outside in the freezing temps for a bit.

Anyway, I haven't found any fleas jumping on my feet or biting me after I sprayed this everywhere. After I sprayed it, it does give out a gas/oil smell for a bit. In few minutes, the smell goes away.

Product says it will keep killing the bugs for up to 7 months. We will see about that..

*Edit 12/9/2012* Been using this product for months now. I haven't seen any fleas jumping on me for few months when I walk on my carpets. However, walking on the hard floor is another story. I'm going to buy another bottle.

They all got very excited when I opened the bag, but the terrier was the only one who seemed very enthused about the treat itself. All 3 dogs LOVED the treats and got very possessive of their own. The dogs range from about 15 pounds to 30 pounds. It took the boston terrier the longest to eat. These bones are similar to Denta Bones in style, but they have much better ingredients. I've given Haley natural dental bones before, and these have a similar smell. I'm not sure if it's the rosemary or what other ingredient.

I am very impressed and pleased with these bones. They seem to keep the dogs busy for a while longer than denta bones, so that is definitely a good thing! I will be purchasing these for Haley in the future. I doubt I would give her one every day because of the calories, but maybe she will get them as a special treat a couple times a week.

These things last at least 20 times longer than a typical rawhide chew toy. The base material is not digestible but the pieces that break off from the toy are small flakes that pass right through my dog. In other words, the nylon material does not break or fracture off; instead, it slowly wears down in a controlled manner.

I did not have very good results with the softer, clear nylabone rubber bones -my dog was able to chew off medium-sized pieces, which could easily get lodged in his throat.

We first purchased a Nylabone for our dog about 1.5 years ago and it is her absolute favorite chew toy, and is holding up VERY well. Any time anybody we know gets a dog, we purchase them a nylabone as a gift.

Pros:

Durable. Even the strongest of chewers won't destroy this in any short period of time, as long as you buy the appropriate size for them.

Clean. Unlike rawhide or other natural bones, there isn't any residue that will come off of this to stain or otherwise leave marks on carpet, rugs, etc.

Different types of treats have different advantages. Bits of raw or cooked meat are great as a "high value" reward during initial training or for training under distraction. A softer, manufactured treat is good for rapid and involved work, when you don't want chewing to slow down the action. And a dry, crunchy treat like these biscotti provide a wonderful, practical, general-purpose solution. They don't need special storage and they don't go bad. They are low-cal. They are clean to handle. They are easy to deal with during the winter, when wearing gloves.

Regarding the user photo posted, of fractured bits of biscotti, I'd say that based on my experience that problem was likely one of poor luck with the shipping. As with any sort of dry grain food, some does end up damaged, much as is the case with breakfast cereal. Each bag does end up with some crumbs at the bottom, even in the best case. Personally, I've never felt ripped off by this, as the vast majority of the treats have been in good shape. And the crumbs can be added to the dog's food, or mixed in with peanut butter for a treat toy, to add a little interest.

This is a high end treat that is by far the favorite of my dogs. The "original bite size" is perfect for medium to large dogs at about 1/4 inch cubes. After a few times, my dogs would perform the "expected" behavior as soon as I would rattle the container. The spare treats keep well in the freezer for months. Very healthy ingredients without fat to upset their digestion.

Don't be fooled by the low price. These are some of the smallest pigs ears I have ever seen. Seriously, piglet ears as most of them were 1 1/2" wide by 3" long. Therefore they were not at all the value I thought I was going to get.
