I'm going to have to disagree with the previous review of this product. They obviously have a large cat?? These treats are actually a bit too big for my Persians and I have to squash them so that the cats can get their teeth into them instead of just rolling them around and losing them. I would actually rate this product much higher except for several things. I rate it high because my cats ALL love them (8 cats), I rate it high on ingredients because it's very difficult to find cat treats that aren't just dry food in disguise complete with corn and wheat ingredients, and lastly, I would LOVE to rate these for effectiveness in keeping the teeth clean, but I just don't know if they work worth a darn... it's too early to tell. The product does not get top rating from me because of the high price for low quantity and for the difficulty my cats have in eating them without my intervention.

Every year at the vet office, we would be told that one of our cats had a problem with dental plaque. After going through the trouble to have her teeth cleaned, we figured these would be worth a try even though they are expensive. The cats love them! The only problem is that they are too big for either cat to eat so I cut them in half. The treats have an outer casing though, which is important in helping clean the teeth and is unfortunately very fragile and likely to tear. To slice the treats, I very carefully poke through the casing and the treat all the way around with a knife until it comes apart a regular slicing motion would tear the casing and reduce the effectiveness of the treat. This is quite time consuming when I open a new package (I split all 50 treats at once to make dispensing easier later), but we have been plaque-free and the cats are happy!

My cats loved these treats. I loved these because they are cheaper than the CET brand, and neither of my cats had any trouble eating them. Why the single star then? Well, because I can no longer give them to my cats in good conscience. They just recently changed the formula to include eucalyptus oil, which is toxic to cats. And it's listed not once, but twice. I have an elderly cat who has chronic renal failure, and there is no way I am giving her anything that is even the tiniest bit toxic. Maybe if I had 2 young cats I would be less concerned, but as it stands, there is no way I will buy these treats again unless they change the formula back. I still have the packages from the last order I bought, and there is no eucalyptus oil anywhere in the ingredients. I have no idea what they were thinking when they added a well known toxin to their formula, but I will be buying the CET treats from now on.

I have to admit, I'm not really sure what some of these reviews mean. I have a 16 year old cat. I have bought these treats on and off over several years of her life, and she loves them. I feel good about the ingredients (primarily dried fish) and the tooth benefit (though I am neither a vet nor a dentist). The only reason I have not bought these for other years has had to do with my proximity to a PetSmart, where I used to buy them. Tonight, I came to Amazon to order some for her upcoming birthday, and I read what I think may be misleading reviews. To help people with their purchases, let me add a little bit here.

First, a description. These look, feel and sound a lot like pieces of strofoam packing peanuts, only about 3/4 the size. They are wide in circumference, maybe a half inch or a bit more. They are difficult to get into a mouth of a cat, ie. the reviewer's Persian, true. The way they work is to have the cat work the fishy styrofoam through the teeth several times in order to scrape off plaque and tartar. Although my old girl is only 6 lbs, I also have had a 20 lb calico and an 11 lb Persian. All three cats did well with these treats. They seemed to chew them for a while, and the squeaking sound on their teeth as they ate made me feel like they did their job.

Second, cost. These are definitely more expensive than several kinds of cat treats. I would not give them as treats, frankly, but more as a tooth brushing.

Third, I cannot verify if they are effective or not empirically. I know that the vet is routinely surprised by my 16-yr. old cat's teeth. 1. She still has them all. 2. They look great with very little tartar. I don't brush her teeth. Maybe it's the treats, the 14 years of dry food, or genetics. Either way, I'll order these for her Bday, and I'll feel good about the purchase.

My senior cat loves these, and comes asking for one every night before bedtime. I have to disagree with the one star rating another user gave because of 'eucalyptus oil' in the ingredients...I see none of that listed and wonder if that review is mixed up with another product. Here are the ingredients according to my package:

"Freeze-dried fish, dextrose**, soybean oil, soy lecithin, antioxidant (containing tocopherols, ascorbic acid, natural flavor and citric acid), purified water, glucose oxidase (aspergillus niger), dried whey protein concentrate, potassium sorbate. **A substrate necessary for the enzyme system. This product is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only."

NO Eucalyptus!
