Just a regular string rope. Once your dog is to the chewing and pulling stage you will have string all over your house. He seems to like it, I like the fact that the knot is the middle so it makes it more even when trying to play tug.The rope is cheaply made, it's so loose that literally lasted 2 minutes in one piece, I'm not so sure about the 18 inches, I did not measure it, but it looks smaller. Take my advise, do not buy this rope.
