This is a good product for your little bettas or goldfish or whatever other carnivorous fishies you might have without all of the mess of live food. The only downside is that for some reason 1 in every 50 people can have an allergic reaction to freeze-dried blood worms. So don't rub your face after handling and wash your hands!

Don't look at this product as just an occasional treat for your fishes. This is a great product to feed your fishes once a day. I like it because it has some of the lowest phosphate levels in a dried fish food I can find. Phosphates cause algae blooms in your aquarium when they exceed certain levels, especially when combined with other chemical imbalances and lots of light (see my Aquarium Pharmaceutical's Phosphate Test Kit and Sea Chem's Neutral Regulator review!). Other dried flake foods can have as much as 1% or more of phosphate, which can increase the frequency you'll need to do water changes or have algae blooms. I think all aquarists will agree we want to keep that to minimum!

I feed this product to my freshwater tetra, catfish and shrimps regularly and they all love it. I can concur with the other reviews up to the date of this one that most smaller freshwater fishes will consume this product such as betas and goldfish. In the wild, fishes like tetras eat aquatic larvae of insects such as bloodworms, which is the larva to a non-biting fly. The guaranteed analysis is as follows: min. crude protein 65.0%, min. crude fat 5.0%, max. crude fiber 3.5%, max. moisture 6.5% and min. phosphorus 0.1%. It will float a little while when you first put it in your tank but the water is absorbed rather quickly and hopefully your filter's flow will knock some of it to the bottom for your bottom feeders.

My fish like these but I have a problem with the size of the worms. Basically only about 1/10 of the package contains usable good sized worms the rest is just very tiny worms an powder. This powder is no good for the water. Anyway the fish love them but you don't get much use out a package.

Hikari is the ONLY brand of worms and brine shrimp I ever buy at my local pet store, and the reason, is quality. They use no fillers, unlike the San Francisco Bay brand, and the worms/shrimp are always consistant in size and mass.

However, the freeze dried type has a couple of cons; first, they do not sink the way frozen (thawed) or fresh worms do. Reason, of course, is the fact that these a VERY dry and will need some moisture to start to sink. This means that if you want your bottom feeders to have a chance to taste these, you'll have to use tongues to bring the dry worms directly in front of them or to their inmediate area, or the rest of mid to high swimmers will devour the worms before they reach mid levels.

Second, again, their dryness makes them a bit harder to eat, at least right away; I noticed one of my fish had one stuck in its mouth, not being able to swallow the dry, stiff worm. So, to fix this problem or to at least make it easier on your fish, you can pre-soak the worms in aquarium water (never soak them with foreign sources)for a few minutes, then dump the lot into the aquarium, the now wet worms will sink easily and will be that much easy for your fish to consume.

I'll be honest, I always try to feed as close to fresh as I can (13 yrs now), the Freeze Dried Hikari worms are good for a quick, "I'm out of fish food" solution, but I wouldn't recommend it for a daily feeding routine, unless you are willing to do what I said above. Also, as another reviewer said, you get A LOT of dust and tiny clear chunks, which are worm peelings or skin if you will, which have no benefit on your fish diet. My two cents.

I have three male fancy guppies in a 5-1/2 gallon tank. They go crazy over these bloodworms. The guppies have always come to the corner of the tank whenever I approach in the hope that they will be fed. Since I've started treating them to bloodworms, they go into their happy dance when they see me. I break up the worms because the guppies are small, but they don't seem to mind whether they are getting whole worms or powdered worms they love it all. I feed into a floating feeding ring. These worms would probably sink eventually, but they never get the chance. If any have made it to the bottom of the tank, they must be snapped up immediately because I've never found any bloodworm debris. There has been no downside to this product.
