There's no substitute if you are using Petmate Jumbo litter pan. I bought generic filters before and they are not as thick and don't fit right. This one fits perfect, and absorbs orders pretty well.

Update: After my original purchase of one filter I purchased 6 more (in case I couldn't find them again when I needed them.) The service was great. They came in the mail within 1 or 2 days and as an added bonus, we received 6 Greenies cat treat sample bags. The sample bags have quite a few treats in them. After thinkin this was a steep price to pay, I was definitely happy to get the treats!

Original Review: We have a Petmate litter box and originally purchased the "universal" filter replacements at the pet store. These did not work. The filter that came with our litter box has one rounded edge and a pocket on the top side with clear/white pebbles in it. I returned the universal replacements and tried to find the type that came with the litter box (because it works really well!) but couldn't find it anywhere. After reading some reviews on Amazon (even though the picture of the product isn't much help) I decided to try this one out. The filter arrived at my house the next day and it was exactly like the one that came in the litter box originally.

The only reason I didn't give this product 5 starts is the price. Since I couldn't find it elsewhere, I don't know exactly what to compare the price to but I did see another seller on Amazon has the same product (or so I think, again the single picture shown is no help) for quite a bit less. I'm just not sure I'm willing to try it out when I know this is the type filter I need.

After searching through five local pet stores I could not find these Petmate Filters. I went to Amazon, which I should have done to start with and found the filters immediately. The filters really cut down on dust and I can attest to this because during the time period when I could not find the filters, the dust was a mess. So glad to find this item. I change the filters every three months and ordered ten packages!

This product works great for our single cat home. it cuts down the oders of teh litter box,you can't tell there is a cat in the house.

I change this filter every 3 months for my cat's litter box (1 cat); easy to slip into the lid. I use a permanent marker to write the date on the filter so I don't have to guess how long it's been. The filters are cheap at 1.49 each, but the 4.59 shipping is three times the item cost, so I usually order 4 filters at a time to justify the shipping cost.
