The breeder where we got our little black pug puppy, Ruby Tuesday, recommended bully sticks as a way to keep the puppy busy and out of trouble. At the time, I shrugged it off, because the idea of what bully sticks are made of is sickening. My spouse brought home a sample of Canine Caviar Buffalo Bully Stix and we've been buying them ever since. We use Canine Caviar kibble as part of her diet and it's been working out well for her, so we felt like this brand of bully stick would be a good one to keep using.

In addition to providing healthy pet products, Canine Caviar supports pet cancer research. We could buy cheaper bully sticks, but we are loyal to this brand because of their commitment to healthy pet foods and research into pet cancer. We hope they are sincere and continue to keep these values.

Even the local pet supply store where we got the sample has trouble getting these bully sticks ,so I'm happy to be able to get them at Amazon.

Bully stix smell bad and they get sticky and gooey after they are chewed, however the dogs love them and they do keep the puppy out of mischief. We have two Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs who gobble them in a couple of minutes, but a bully stick lasts for hours for little Ruby. We take it away after she's had it for a while, and so one stick lasts for days.

With all of the petfood related recalls these days, I've become quite paranoid about buying new products. Our local petstore suggested these Buffalo bully sticks for our dogs, and after research I bought some. The dogs LOVE them. They don't have any crazy byproducts in them, and they last quite some time for all of our dogs, minus one. My pitbull/lab mix goes through them fairly quickly, but we are ok with that. It's worth being able to give them chews and know that they aren't going to suddenly be sick from them.

These are the perfect size for my 12lb toy poodle and it takes him about 4 days to completely chew one up (he only spends about 30min to an hour a day chewing it). He gets SO excited when I get a new one out of the bag! I love that it is free-range, grass fed buffalo. These have a slight odor to them, but not NEAR as bad as a typical bully stick/bone (the white ones with the red gummy stuff inside those stink so bad and I refuse to have them in my house). These especially come in handy when I'm too tired to play with him at night these help calm him down and give him something to focus on.

This product was quickly consumed by my dogs----they loved it. My only complaint is they went "too fast"----I think they need to be a tad thicker so they will last longer.

Our puppy golden chews through treats pretty quickly, we have been sampling these we found at Marshalls at 1/2 price, our pup loves them and it serves the dual purpose of lasting a little while as well. So we're back to buy some more. Thus far the only thing that she likes that has lasted longer is the sliced elk horn. She doesn't like it as much but I'm hoping she gets a taste for it.

Since I am a firm believer in horse bribery, I have not been without Mrs Pasture's Cookies for the past 8 years. The cookie goes in with the bit immediately. My horse will stand untied at the mounting block 30 +minutes without moving. When my right leg swings over him, that head whips around saying "I'm not moving till I get my cookie!". This works for a 75 yr old that rides a Peruvian daily.

Our greyhound absolutely loves these bones! Even though it's designed to clean her teeth, I think she plans her day around the opportunity to chew on this luscious bone. She knows she gets the bone after she finishes her dinner. I think she would eat sawdust to get to this bone! Like the original Coke recipe, does it have Cocaine in it? Our dog is a loving, docile pet, but regularly growls if we try to take it away from her...we give her 1/3 of a bone after each dinner meal. Too much of this product seems to effect the stool negatively. If you want your dog to place you on a pedestal, buy this product!

I bought this bone for our 8 month old schnoodle. He loved it, and ate all of the inside 'meat' within two days. True, he shouldn't have been left to eat it so quickly but he also shouldn't have gotten sick. The day after he started eating this bone, he developed diarrhea with some blood for a couple of days. After a week, he is still having loose stool and yesterday he vomited twice. Otherwise, he has been eating his food and drinking water as usual and is playing like he always does so we have been trying to wait for his system to clear up on its own. Another couple of days of these symptoms and we'll be taking him to the vet. Btw, I did a google search on the Dingo brand for any cases of puppies/dogs getting sick and I found multiple hits where people were talking about their dog having the same reaction as ours did. I also found out that there was a recall on another type of Dingo treat 1 year ago. Please look for another brand of bones for your pet, better to be safe then sorry.

After transitioning from Natural Balance Duck and Potato, we've gone through several bags of Sojo's Turkey over the course of several months, so I feel I can write a fair review.

Our dogs are small poodle mixes, rescue dogs, weighing 10 lb., 10 lb. and 7 lb. We follow the Sojo instructions mixing water to food in the recommended 2:1 ratio. We feed twice a day. I've spoken to customer service a few times with questions and they've been super nice, although they didn't always have helpful answers.

Impressions: The food smells great (even to me!) and the dogs go bonkers for it. They love every bite.

Sojo's has variable consistency some bags were a powdery consistency creating a mush when mixed with water. These are the best bags everything becomes part of the thick mush.

Other bags have big chopped pieces of veggies/meat these are not my favorite bags. The added water hydrates the pieces and then creates a ton of watery gravy too much fluid to feed the dogs.

After a month our dogs each lost a pound of body weight. They had no body fat to lose so it was a bit distressing. They warn that fat/weight will come off a dog after switching to Sojo's and then an appropriate amount of weight will be gained back. Our dogs never gained it back. I was feeding the amount recommended for dogs up to 12 lbs (which should be more than enough food for our pups).

Despite this, for an hour or two before each meal time all three pups were clearly in distress shaking, quivering, starving. This went on for many weeks before I decided there is something lacking in this food. (I didn't know if this was excitement for the yummy food or actual weakness/lack of energy, so I gave it some time.) I even tried feeding more than the 12 lb. dog amount enough to supposedly sustain a much bigger dog and still they were quivering and weak (and our dog food budget was taking a big hit).

I should mention that during this time, in an attempt to maintain a Sojo's-only diet, I bought Sojo's Grain-free and added some of that to the turkey blend in their bowl. The Grain-free deserves a review of it's own, but let's just say it's pretty smelly. It's smells strongly of broccoli. Not bad thing, just smelly.

I have slowly transitioned them back to a mix of the two Sojo's and Natural Balance (ratio of 2:1). Now our pups are happy again, they aren't shaking and panicked at meal time.

The claim that dogs will have better teeth and better breath... Sojo's breath does seem a bit nicer (due to the parsley I assume) but their teeth were not cleaner. I imagine a professional cleaning plus feeding Sojo's exclusively might result in teeth staying cleaner. Feeding this food doesn't change the current cleanliness of their teeth (though their customer service rep tried to spin it this way).

Sojo's has high water content so our dogs urinated constantly. That's a good thing for their kidneys, but a bad thing for our little guy who can't hold his pee. He had a million accidents while on Sojo's.

Sojo's has high fiber content so our dogs became poop machines. Non-stop poop makers. This is good for their anal glands, but it really gave me and our septic system a run for its money (we dispose of their feces in the toilet). Tell-tale was the comment by our groomer when we picked up our little 7 pounder: "He did a human size poop. How did he have all that in him?" Exactly. That's Sojo's.

And the worst, most telling, example that Sojo's didn't provide adequate nutrition... About 4 hours after eating, our little guy would go out to the dog yard and chew on old Sojo's poop. There are visible bits of undigested veggies in Sojo's poop (from the Grain-free) and he would pick them apart and eat them. He was starving. Now that Natural Balance is mixed into his meals he no longer eats poop. He's happy and content. [Only on an all-Sojo's diet did he have this pica behavior. The veggie bits are still in the feces, but he has no interest and no need to eat them. Another spin from customer service: "The dogs love Sojo's so much I've heard they will eat the poop." Now we know the pica behavior is driven by hunger, not passion.]

I equate Sojo's to the old saying about eating Chinese food "two hours later, you're hungry".

In any case, I think we're all very happy now with the mix of food. They have lots of yummy veggies, some turkey and the kibble that sustains them. I wish Sojo's was enough, but it's not. I'm glad to have found a solution without giving up Sojo's altogether. And so are our dogs.

UPDATE 072013: We've been feeding this combination for a good while now and we just took one of our dogs in for a dental cleaning. The vet was surprised to realize our dog has a bunch of teeth that are loose but not diseased. She said the dog needs something to chew on for resistance, to help strengthen the teeth. She recommended we feed a raw chicken wing as a meal once or twice a week. This is a vet who sells ONLY Sojos food. So, be aware that feeding an extremely soft, wet raw food may affect your dog's health both positively and negatively.

Click Here to Read More Reviews >>

I have a 7 year old Australian Shepherd who thrives on this food. She never has health problems and eats this food with gusto, especially when compared to kibble (wouldn't you?) I typically make enough food for 3 or 4 days and store it in a lock and lock container in the fridge. I've always had an interest in feeding raw (and do occasionally give a turkey or chicken neck) but I also travel a lot and needed something I could bring along easily.

She had previously been eating a super premium kibble, but I like the idea of real unprocessed food so much more. The benefits are undeniable.

I am shocked to hear that several reviewers are supplementing with rice. This is a grain FREE food, as dogs are not really meant to eat/digest grains. It being grain free is what makes it so costly. The Honest Kitchen makes similar canine diets with grains for what I consider to be significantly less cost. If I wanted my Sojos to go a little farther I'd probably add egg or some raw ground meat.

The 8lb bag lasts her around 6 weeks, which is about how long the 28.6lb bag of super premium kibble she was previously eating lasted (and for around the same price).

Thanks to Amazon for the always-perfect service. I love being able to order this food with expedited shipping to my door for less than the price of buying it in store.

I have to say that this is the best food available. My puppy had been having dandruff and a dull coat on a diet of high quality, corn free kibble. Her coat was shiny and flake free within 24 hours of starting this diet, and she loves it (thats not saying much because she'll eat anything though). I ate some myself and it is pretty good. It feels good feeding a food that is actually FOOD, not mystery brown chunks. It is pricey, I feed it along with a homemade raw meat/veggie deal, but it is great for traveling.

I really wish it was more affordable so we could feed it to large dogs (we have two 90lb+ dogs). Check out Grandma Lucy's for a comparable product that is slightly cheaper. (10lbs for the price of 8lbs of sojos).

I bought this for a road trip across the crountry and back. My dogs are raw fed and this seemed the closest to what I made at home. We spent 15 days on the road and our four dogs enjoyed every meal the entire trip. They ate the food with gusto and had totally normal poops the entire trip. I used ziploc bags to fix a meal ahead (they eat twice daily) and stored the soaking food in our ice chest. Now I use this food for weekend trips and have some stashed in our disaster kit.

I switched my Rottweiler/Lab mix, Jagger, from Natural Balance LID to Sojos Complete Turkey because he had very loose poops. I thought I would try something different. I made the switch in August 2012. At the time, he was a very healthy 77 lbs. He absolutely loved the smell and taste of the new food. After a few days, his poops were great. Being an active dog at this weight, I was feeding him 3 cups a day which, according to the package, was appropriate for adult dogs 76-100 lbs.

In October I noticed he started looking a little slimmer. This was slightly concerning because he was already so lean and muscular that he really should not have been losing weight. I thought that I needed to feed him more, so I upped the feeding amount to almost 3.75 cups. I thought this would be enough and he would replace the lost weight.

Come late December, I started noticing how much skinnier he had become. I could almost count his ribs while standing and he had lost significant muscle mass. He now weighed 66 lbs, meaning he lost nearly 16% of his body weight since starting him on Sojos. The vet did blood work and checked a stool sample and everything indicated that he should be perfectly healthy.

Using a dog food calorie calculator from dogfoodadvisor.com, Jagger needed 1800 calories a day. This resulted in 5.37 cups of Sojos daily, as the food only has 335 kcal/cup. Even worse, the Sojos grain-free mix, without any raw, dehydrated meat, contains 332 kcal/cup. In other words, you're paying for the extra meat but it offers no caloric benefit.

I called the company to make them aware of their misleading label and they said it could take a few months for a dog to adapt to Sojos. That may be, but calories are simply a unit of energy and a dog cannot adjust to that much of a deficiency.

Furthermore, dogfoodadvisor.com estimates that the food is comprised of 26% protein and 58% carbs. As dogs really have no need to consume any carbohydrates whatsoever, this food would probably only be mediocre even when fed at the proper amount. I switched my dog over to Orijen 6-Fish Grain-Free Dry Dog Food, 29.7lb just yesterday and will report back in a few weeks' time.

Can't say it feels good to write this.

We first ordered this product about 2 months ago and the first box of 20 bones lasted us that long because it was very densely packed rawhide. Each bone lasted approximately 2-2.5 hours of constant chewing. Needless to say we liked the product and reordered it. Unfortunately the the new box is completely different from the first!

First of all, the bones in the second batch have a pinkish/brownish hue to them as if they're coated with something for flavor. Instead of a densely wrapped single layer of rawhide, the second batch has ball-shaped pieces of rawhide wrapped by a single layer of rawhide (imagine peas in a pea pod). The bones are very light in comparison to the previous batch and my dog literally goes through them in 15 minutes!! He threw up the "ball" parts one night and his stool became much softer since we gave him the new bones.

I'm going to try and return the new box to Amazon and reorder to see if maybe there was a mixup. I'll update my review accordingly.

--------

April 2011 update:

Well, Amazon was great and I was more than impressed with the service... they instantly shipped me a new box! The box we received had the same types of bones as we received in the second shipment which we weren't happy with. So unfortunately we'll have to find a different source for rawhide bones. By the way, since dogs are sensitive to changes in their diet, I decided to experiment and let our dog have these new bones and see if he'll get used to them with time. Several weeks have gone by and he still has softer stool when we give him the bones, he also has diarrhea because of them once in a while. When we don't give him the bones his stool is a better color and is nice and firm. Sorry, didn't mean to get too graphic, just trying to give as many details as I can.

I've bought other products, like Macho Stix, and my Bernese Mountain Dog--young, slightly hyper-active and a very aggressive chewer--makes short work of them. Even a "long" macho stick would only last him about 15 minutes. Alas, he's completely indifferent to all plastic bones, sterilized cooked bones, and other substitutes for rawhide.

A single Green Cow bone lasts him about a hour and half. Great entertainment and mental exercise--when he's done, he plops down very contentedly for a nice long rest, all hyper-activity expended. He's in no danger of choking because there are no "knots" on the end that he can swallow whole. (We watched him very carefully the first 10 times we gave him one, but he chews the pieces up very carefully and slowly).

He ADORES these bones! He gets three a week and we make the most of them--makes him very motivated when we do obedience training, for he'll jump through hoops to get one of these! Highly recommend.

These are the best-built retriever rolls we've seen in years. They appear to be constructed all in one piece and are densely constructed. We have an 80-pound dog and a 105-pound dog, both avid chewers. The smaller dog will get only a few inches into one of these in a day -she'll chew, nap, chew, look out the window, chew ... and the bigger dog, who is more food-motivated, will have one of these last him at least a day. If there is one criticism -I wonder if the rawhide isn't a bit too thick, even for our large dogs. Time will tell.

I will start off by saying that I had this product on subscribe and save for a year before the shipment in April 2013 that made my dogs sick. Until the shipment in question, the bones were consistently as described, my dogs loved them, and they were a reasonable price. I have two big dogs that need something to chew every night, so these bones were a perfect solution.

However, I received the last shipment in April 2013, and I noticed that the bones were shorter than the previous shipments. I just thought to myself that Rush Direct must have found a new supplier and didn't think twice about giving my loving boys these bones, as they had had no previous reactions to them.

This is gonna get a little graphic, excuse me for a moment. The next day, they both had explosive diarrhea, and I mean explosive. I work all day, a dog walker comes in the afternoon every other day, and unfortunately, this was not the day. I came home to diarrhea ALL over my home. I had to throw away several throw rugs, and wash everything as well as their beds. The poor guys were so ill! It went on like this for three days until I brought them to the vet. (I waited three days because I thought it would pass, when it hadn't by the next evening even after the dog walker had come in the afternoon, I knew something was seriously wrong and made the appointment for the next day.) The vet told me that based on their fecal exams they had a bacteria in their intestines. I was stumped as to what could have caused this because I hadn't introduced anything new into their diets.

One of them responded to the meds right away and stopped having diarrhea but his stool was still soft. The other one, unfortunately did not respond, and while he could control himself in the house, continued to have intestinal issues and diarrhea for two weeks. After medication and exam fees, I had spent $380 over this time period. I knew I had to start looking at their diets. I feed them Fromm's GOLD Senior dog food and there were not any product recalls published. It had to be the bones, then I remembered that this shipment was a different size. I stopped giving them both the bones, and continued with his medication and finally, after nearly a month the poor guy has regular poop, and the other's is nice and firm.

I don't expect Rush Direct to pay me the $380 in expenses I incurred as a result of their defective product, but I do expect ANY VENDOR of pet goods to be transparent about where they get their products and to ensure the quality of those products. I have sent two complaints to Amazon about this issue and they've responded by refunding me and giving me a great customer experience, but I have not heard word one from the vendor. Not even an apology. I will never buy anything from Rush Direct again and am currently looking for a new bulk bone supplier if anyone has any suggestions!

Second batch reeked of bleach. Told amazon, no return available so stuck with a bad box. This one batch made me wonder how bad the quality control is for these Green Cow products. Decided not to take a chance again. Have never had these issues with the Chunky Chews brand.

My cats love this stuff though we buy the dog treats because they are cheaper. It appears to be the same product. The only difference as far as I've been able to determine is a caricature of a dog on the bag instead of a cat. My cats don't seem to mind this potential affront to their sensibilities.

At feeding time my two felines will often wait until I place a few morsels in their dish before beginning to eat and often eat them before their "wet" food.

The bag and website states that the salmon is wild-caught in Alaska and shipped to China for freeze-drying and packaging. Hopefully they don't add anything unhealthy to the product during that procedure, as is so common with actual processed foods. At least the salmon isn't farmed Frankenfish which should be illegal as it's clearly unethical and damaging to the ecosystem. (Please forgive the soapbox moment).

My cats are super finicky; they won't eat treats if they are not WildSide Salmon.

It tastes kinda fishy to me, but as long as the cats like it, I'll keep buying it.

MADE IN CHINA. Have used this product for several years with no problem. Latest order made my cat very sick. Would have rated this product zero if system would have let me. I think they have changed the ingredients.

She waits every day for her special treat. My other two cats won't touch it. She lives for it. I love to give it to her, because it is healthy and she loves it!

Saw this at Unleashed and was intrigued by a toy that had some rawhide (which my dog loves) combined with a rubber to keep him busy. My dog loves rawhides but he can power through a big one (7") in about 30-45 minutes.

The concept is good, but my dog lost interest very quickly. Also, it is messy to "refill" the rawhideyou have to soak it to make it soft, thread it through the holes, and then wait for it to dry.

My wife and I have a 25lb whippet-shepherd mix who really likes to chew, and is rather smart by dog standards. These two characteristics often don't mix well, which has led us on a search for the best of the best puzzle chew toys. I would like to thank Kyjen for sending me a copy of this toy in exchange for an honest review!

As soon as I took this out of the package and our pup smelled rawhide, her little tail started to wag! It's one of her favorite things, and despite there being a relatively small amount of rawhide strung on to the bone, it didn't take away from her butt wriggling in excitement!

BUILD/QUALITY

Well, it's nice to see that this is made of natural rubber. Not only does it have that nice vanilla-like smell, but you also don't have to worry about your dog swallowing potentially-toxic pieces of their toys! Now, I want to refer back to the title of my review in reference to the quality and how long this will last your dog. If your dog is an indiscriminate chewer, you will probably see pieces of the rubber coming off eventually. It's not because this isn't made of durable, high-quality rubber, but simply because there are holes for the rawhide to be threaded making it easier to bite a piece off. Luckily, our pup was MUCH more interested in the rawhide than the rubber, and after two chewing sessions and some fetch in the living room it looks no worse for wear. The toy comes with a refill, which was appreciated.

FUN/DIFFICULTY

I wouldn't call this a difficult puzzle toy there are no moving parts or hidden compartments like some of Kyjen's other toys, but the fact that it's not just a piece of rawhide really kept our dog interested. I would say it took about half an hour for her to get all the rawhide off and eaten, which is not bad for her! That said, she is only 25lbs, so your mileage really will vary. She had a great time standing on the bone while tugging at the rawhide!

REFILLING

Now, something that might be too much hassle for some is refilling the bone. According to the directions you soak the rawhide strips in warm water for five minutes, thread them through the bone, and then leave it to harden (around 12-24hrs depending on conditions). It's not the simplest of systems, but given how much our pup enjoys this toy I can't say that I mind it too much I plopped it in a glass of hot water while doing some dishes and it was ready to thread in 5 minutes. The refills are available here on Amazon, and will run you about $1 per strip. Compared to the refills for our Everlasting Large Bento Ball (three and half dollars each) which last her about an hour and a half, the cost/time ratio seems about right!

There is a piece of paper with a warning wrapped in each refill don't forget to remove it before soaking them (I didn't notice until soggy!)

The instructions tell you cut off excess rawhide, but I just double threaded which didn't seem to be an issue.

The holes are numbered for easy restringing I would suggest looping around number 1 so that it is held in place by tension!

OVERALL

There are several reviews on here from owners of heavy chewers that just didn't find that the toy lasted for their dogs and I have no doubt they are reporting their honest experiences. I also have to be very honest and say that my dog really enjoys this toy and it keeps her busy! I would probably rate this at 4.5 stars if Amazon allowed it the refill process is a little bit of a hassle but as a standalone product it really is one of the better easy puzzle toys out there for a moderate chewer. Amazon's star rating defines five stars as "I love it", and four stars as "I like it" I'm definitely right in between those two ratings! I would HIGHLY suggest buying a size bigger than you normally would despite being only 25lbs our dog is long and skinny (medium-sized) and I think the large bone keeps her busy for longer then a medium bone would! My wife and I wouldn't call this the answer to our puzzle toy search, but it's definitely good to keep a moderate chewer busy for a decent amount of time! Definitely recommended depending on the dog!

Good product and Tilly enjoys playing with it, trying to get as much rawhide off as possible. However, the plastic is not durable enough for her strong teeth, and she has eaten away at much of the green plastic, trying to get the hidden rawhide parts. It was fun for her, but we can't allow her to play with it since she's eating the plastic off.

If you have a dog that regularly chews through toys pass on this. My lab destroyed the large size of this toy almost instantly. Instead of chewing the rawhide he just chewed right through all the tabs that you thread the rawhide through. Apparently it was easier to chew through the rubber tabs than the rawhide. With the tabs chewed off this toy is useless. I know my dog is pretty good at chewing apart toys but he does have several other treat toys that have held up. Even other toys he has destroyed lasted at least a little while but not this one. I gave him the toy walked away for a minute throw the packaging and went back to see how he liked the new toy. He had already chewed several of the tabs off in that short amount of time. I watched him chew through the rest in another min or so. I have him the extra rawhide strip that came with the toy and it took him longer (about 10 min) to eat the rawhide alone then he spent destroying the toy itself.

My dog is a chewer. He also gets bored easily, which means he's done chewing on his Kong or Nylabone in about 20 minutes. This product kept him entertained for two hours (at which point he had devoured all the rawhide). The downside is that the rawhide strips cost about $1 each and take about 24 hours to dry, so he only gets this toy as a special treat.
