Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have had my two dogs on grain-free dry dog food for some time now after it was recommended by a trainer who suggested it would help with a multitude of issues including semi-frequent vomiting by the Shih Tzu. She was right. We've been giving the boys the grain-free, and everyone is happy and healthy. We normally give them salmon flavored dog food because both dogs appear to love fish. When this chicken and potato flavor became available on Vine I decided to give it a try. I was shocked when I received the bag, and both dogs accepted the kibble as they would a treat. Not too surprising for the Jack Russell mix, but the Shih Tzu is picky, picky, picky. I figured it was mighty tasty if they thought it was a dog cookie.
Then I mixed it in with their other dog food, steamed it, and presented it to them as a meal. Once again, they both loved it.
I will seriously consider this dog food when I buy the next bag because I will now only buy grain-free dry food, and though this is expensive, it does my heart good to see the boys enjoy food this much.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I have gotten a bit obsessed with dog food nutrition in the past year, and in doing so have switched to grain-free food. I feel a bit guilty giving kibble at all, it is so processed, but with 3 big dogs I just can't afford all canned, so I mixed grain-free canned with grain-free kibble. I was happy to pick up this bag of grain-free dog food and give it a try. My dogs will eat anything so I base my judgement of a dog food on it's nutritional value, not on it's taste.NUTRITION:
It's not bad. It's grain-free, obviously, so that's a plus. Chicken is the first ingredient, which is pretty good. And there are no by-products in it ("meat by-products" can be stuff from the slaughterhouse floor), which is also good. And it contains chicken fat which is a good source of nutrients.
BUT chicken contains about 80% water, which is lost after cooking so the end meat product included is a fraction of the weight it was when it was called the "first" ingredient.
BUT it includes peas and pea protein which are cheap sources of protein. And a dog food that gets so much protein from plants is not getting a lot of protein from the meat.
BUT potatoes are the 2nd ingredient more cheap filler and dogs don't need potatoes.
BOTTOM LINE:
Grain-free is always better than not (ALL grains are irritants to dogs they cannot digest them), but in the grain-free kibble arena, I'd call this product only average.Grains are not a natural part of a dog's diet, so grain free kibbles are the best choice (aside from a raw diet) that pet owners can make. Unfortunately, some people don't understand that "grain free" does not necessarily mean "high quality." It's still important to read labels.
Dog food ingredients are listed by weight. Reading the list, chicken is first which is good (although it isn't chicken meal which means that it is still including the water weight of the chicken, giving it a little boost in rankings). The next four ingredients are Potatoes, Yellow Peas, Pea Protein Concentrate, and Potato Starch. These are all included before the fat source in the food and splitting the ingredients (peas AND pea concentrate / potatoes AND potato starch) is a trick that dog food companies use to keep the weight lower and keep the protein source (chicken) higher on the ingredient list, making the food look better to consumers that read ingredient lists.
As far as Science Diet/Hill's foods, this is a BIG improvement. It is still, however, mid-quality and nowhere near as good as most grain free diets.
21 lbs of this food is selling for $45. You can buy almost any grain free diet for this cost or less. I'd recommend Orijen, Wellness Core, Annamaet, Nature's Variety Instinct, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, or Earthborn brands. All MUCH better quality, American made, never involved in a recall, and around the same price as the Ideal Balance.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I really wanted to try Hill's Grain free Chicken and Potato dog food. I have 4 chihuahuas. They can be very picky. They really liked this food. I feel better knowing that it is grain free. One of my dogs has a skin condition.
My Vet mentioned that it could be diet related. Hopefully a simpler diet will help.
This food seems to be priced on the high side at over $5 a pound. So far though the dogs seem happy with it.
